It was announced today that wowlebrity Ben Lewis (a director and correspondant on our UK series The Art Show) will premiere his documentary Google and the World Brain at Sundance this year as part of the World Cinema Documentary Competition. A description from Ben’s website: “In the most ambitious project ever conceived on the Internet, Google has been scanning the world’s books for 10 years. They said the intention was to build a giant digital library, but that involved scanning millions of copyrighted works. Across the world, a ragtag army of authors and the occasional librarian launched a campaign against them, which ended in the defeat of one of the world’s most powerful corporations. In this film the central story of Google Books is woven into the broader fabric of the Internet, with its issues of data-mining and privacy, downloading and copyright, freedom and surveillance.” Pretty fascinating stuff, and as an author who joined the The Authors Guild of America and the Association of American Publishers in their filed lawsuits, I can attest to what an important story this is. Can’t wait to see this! Go Ben!
