This might be interesting. Remember there were rumors last year that Leonardo DiCaprio was approached to play the Joker in Todd Phillips’ standalone film about the secret origin of Batman’s arch nemesis? Yeah, well that didn’t work out. A shame, really. Can you imagine what he would have done with the role? But today Variety is reporting that Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to play the Clown Prince of Crime in a movie that will “delve into what it took for the Joker to become a mastermind criminal.”
Sources say the story will take place in the ’80s and have more of the look of a gritty crime drama than comic-book movie.
The movie would fall under a yet-to-be-announced new banner of DC Comics, which would give the studio the opportunity to expand the canon of the iconic comic-book characters with unique story angles that aren’t included in its current cinematic universe.
I’m there. Take my money.
So where does all of this leave poor Jared Leto? He was the most recent Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad, you’ll recall, and is likely to reprise that role in Suicide Squad 2, but will not be featured in this film because popular consensus is that he suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. DC wants a fresh take on the character, so buh-bye Jared.
