DC Comics have divided the comic world with their new existential self-doubt series, Identity Crisis. Super-confident, super-heterosexual, super-powerful and generally rather tiresome superheroes such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Green Arrow find themselves (post 9/11) racked with worry and anxiety (join the rest of us, darling).
The new plots centre on the rape and murder of Sue Dibny, wife of Ralph Dibny, better known (keep up) as Elongated Man from the Justice League. As the heroes gather round her coffin, they agonise over the part they may have played in her demise. The first installments, which came out in June, are already fetching $600 on eBay. It seems that introspection and self-analysis are in with our lycra-clad defenders of freedom. But will The Joker, Penguin, et al, strike whilst our heroes are in group session, comforting each other? Get with it – you’ve got a job to do!!
