Our poor coastal elite POTUS; his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was destroyed by a pickaxe in July, and a month later, the City Council of West Hollywood voted to have it officially removed. Now, Plastic Jesus has surrounded Trump’s star with plastic prison bars.
Plastic Jesus is an artist, sometimes referred to as “the Banksy of Los Angeles”. His work has been used to comment on celebrity and fame, taking on Kanye West and any Kardashian, Harvey Weinstein and the Academy Awards. He has posted “Stop Making Stupid People Famous” on stop signs and road signs around the city.
Plastic Jesus wrote in an email to Artnet News that read:
“There have been calls to jail Trump since the day he was elected, and today he was certainly put behind bars – or at least his now infamous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was caged.”
“Artists are able to connect and convey opinion in a universal way. So, I think it’s important for artists to speak out. I think art encourages dialogue and debate like no other media.”
In 2017, Plastic Jesus erected a life size golden statue of Kanye as Jesus on the cross on Hollywood Boulevard, titled False Idol.
The guerrilla artist has used Trump’s Hollywood star to voice his opposition to the gangster from Queens / washed-up reality star’s policies in the past. Plastic Jesus erected a miniature concrete wall around the star in 2016, sealing the marker off from the rest of the walk.
“Artists are able to connect and convey opinion in a universal way. So I think it’s important for artists to speak out. I think art encourages dialogue and debate like no other media.”
In March 2017, Plastic Jesus used vacant lots around Los Angeles, hanging posters on padlocked fences declaring “Lot reserved for: Future Internment Camp. By order: Donald J. Trump. President United States of America. Executive order 9066.”
The poster included the White House seal and the president’s signature, but a small bar-code on the bottom right corner admitted it was a stunt by the artist.
