The body of a Brazilian footballer Daniel Correa Freitas, 24, was found ‘almost beheaded with his genitals completely severed’ in a bush on Saturday night, by people walking through the deserted section of São José dos Pinhais, a city in the state of Parana.
Although the official cause of death has not been confirmed, Band B, a local newspaper, reported that Freitas had been ‘tortured’.
A police officer told the paper: ‘From the appearance of the body, it was a very violent situation.
‘The man had two deep cuts on his neck, his head was nearly beheaded, and his genitals were severed.’
‘This road [where the body was found] is a bit deserted and already known for the spawning of corpses.
It concluded that the evidence from the case suggests that the man was murdered on the street and dragged for around 100 feet.
The Inquirer quotes police superintendent Edmilson Pereira as saying he thinks the person who committed the murder was “incredibly angry and tortured Freitas until he suffered a very painful death.”
Freitas had been playing soccer professionally since 2013. At the time of his death, he was playing for the São Bento team.
“São Paulo Football Club deeply regrets the death of midfielder Daniel Correa Freitas,” the team stated, in Portuguese, on Twitter.
Several of the other Brazilian soccer teams in the league also tweeted their condolences.
“The Fortaleza sport club regrets the premature death of athlete Daniel Correa Freitas,” said the team on Twitter. “We want strength and lots of light for the friends and family of the player.”
“The Black Bridge Athletic Association deeply regrets the death of midfielder Daniel Correa Freitas,” the soccer team said on Twitter. “Our sentiments are with the athlete’s family and friends.”
