Gotta get this out of our system. No matter how oppressive and silly you might find Scientology, at least it stays in its own yard, doesn’t knock on your door, and minds its own business of dead Thetans, Dianetics, electrical hookups, and vague churchiness. The Christians, however, have decided to take over yoga and purge it of its roots, putting Christian rhetoric where Hindu texts once were, replacing Krishna with Jesus. With around 15 million followers of yoga in the US, it makes sense that Christians would want a piece of that action. “There is a sense among some that this comes from Hinduism,” says Thomas Ryan, a Catholic priest who’s written Prayer of Heart and Body: Meditation, Yoga as a Christian Spiritual Practice. “But when one looks at yoga, it really belongs to world spirituality.” We’ll get bhakti you on that.
