If you happen to live in 1963 New York and work at the Sterling Cooper advertising agency, I have some advice for you: Don’t get too comfortable around a certain bigwig named Don Draper. Lately. we’ve been witness to a disturbing pattern. When Dapper Don learns your darkest secret, there’s a moment that passes between you, when he looks deep into your soul. You know that he knows, and HE knows that you know that he knows etc. He nods his head, says nothing, and you are slightly awed to be in “The Don Draper Cool People’s Club.” You start to think he’s your friend. Even your mentor. Months pass. Maybe even seasons. Then – POW! – when you least expect it, and probably when you need him the most, he’ll come down on you, HARD. He’ll eviscerate you with just a few choice words. It happened to poor Peggy a few weeks ago, when she thought he had her back in a bit of office politics. “Nothing is ever enough for you, is it?” he spat at the girl who has next-to-nothing. Then last night, sweet, sweet Sal – who just tries to make it from day to day without sucking a cock– was on the receiving end of Don’s nastiness. After Sal was fired by the client for NOT being gay, then fired by Sterling Cooper FOR being gay, he made the mistake of hoping that Don might have his back. But when Don venomously hissed “YOU PEOPLE” in his face, it was a shocking reminder that Don Draper is nobody’s hero. He’s not a role model. He’s a manipulative shark, a misogynist, a liar, and now a homophobe. So if you are still stuck in 1963, for God’s sake, stay away from this man. And NEVER let him in on your secret.
