A Pekingese was named Best in Show at the 145th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
The 13 ½-pound Pekingese 8 inch tall, Wasabi is a three-year-old from East Berlin, Pa with an exceptional pedigree and interesting drama behind the scenes.
Since 1877, Westminster – the second oldest continuously running sporting event in the U.S. (the Kentucky Derby is #1) – has been held at Madison Square Garden.
To avoid possible pandemic protocol problems, last fall show executives opted to push it back from February until June. They got it out of midtown Manhattan and 25 miles up the Hudson River, to the grounds of Lyndhurst, a 19th century Gothic mansion.
Coincidentally Lyndhurst was once owned by the Gould family and the Goulds were dog lovers, and guess which breed they LOVED? The Pekingese.
Iris Love, the famed archeologist was one of the owners of Wasabi, but she died from COVID last March. Love was the long-term partner of famed, closeted gossip columnist Liz Smith, who died in 2017.
David Fitzpatrick, another owner and the dog’s handler, thought of Love on the big night.
“It’s a miracle they even had this show…
Originally, I just thought it wasn’t going to be good, not having it in Madison Square Garden. (But) what can you say? It was an exquisite event.”
Fitzpatrick also took Best in Show in 2012 at Westminster, with a Pekingese named Malachi, who was Wasabi’s grandfather. Wasabi’s father, Pickwick, won best in Toy Group in 2017. Last year, Wasabi (whose mother was Sushi) was ranked THE No. 1 show dog in the country.
“I just don’t always think lightning is going to strike twice, but it’s wonderful that it happened.”
