There was a 20th anniversary screening of the iconic 1997 queer indie film Chasing Amy at this year’s OutFest with director Kevin Smith participating in a Q&A after the film. During a discussion about the on-screen gay kiss between Ben Affleck and Jason Lee, Smith revealed that Affleck said
“a man kissing another man is the greatest acting challenge an actor can ever face.”
And when the scene was over, he declared,
“Now, I’m a serious actor.”
Sliiiiiiightly cringeworthy but…. different times, I suppose. And as PAPER notes: “We’ll still take the representation of queerness in any film. (Though, surely, there are more challenging things.)”
