You might remember reading about Jean-Dominique Bauby, the editor of French Elle, who in 1995, when he was 43, suffered a stroke that paralyzed his whole body except for his left eye, but was able to dictate his memoir of internal torment by blinking the story letter by letter. Now New York artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel (Basquiat, Before Night Falls) has made a film about Bauby, Le Scaphandre et la Papillon (The Diving Suit and the Butterfly). In French! As an artist, Schnabel is as prolific as Dali; as a filmmaker his output is more like Malick’s. Would that it were the other way around. (t/y Louis)
