Professional BASE jumper Dean Potter regularly straps his dog Whisper to his back when he leaps off mountainsides. It’s kind of cute (he wears adorable doggie goggles) and kind of cruel (he’s strapped to a man, who may be plunging to his death), but either way, people seem to be up in arms about it. Whisper can’t tell us whether he likes BASE jumping or thinks it’s certain death every time, but does it actually count as animal cruelty, as some people are suggesting? I had a cat once who committed suicide by jumping off the roof of my apartment building, so I’ve given this a lot of thought. I’m just not sure animals understand distance and depth-perception the way we do. And I don’t know that they think about it in terms of “fun” or “dangerous” either. I think Whisper is probably mildly uncomfortable being strapped in, but he’s probably enjoying the time with his master. What do you think?
