Sabrina Carpenter has a bona fide hit with her raw and vulnerable single “Skin,” but many fans (and haters) are speculating that it’s a response to Olivia Rodrigo‘s lyric in her equally raw “Driver’s License.”
Sabrina said she usually knows how her fans will react, but because it’s such a vulnerable moment for her, she said, “I had no idea how people were going to receive it.”
Ryan Seacrest went there and asked Sabrina point blank if “Skin” is a response to the Olivia Rodrigo lyric. Here’s part of her response:
It’s also just not my place to say. I think a lot of people were sort of pointing fingers, so at the end of the day, I was dealing with what I was dealing with internally, and the only way I ever know how to deal with things is to write about it. I literally write about getting sued, so I don’t know why it came as such a shock to people, but it definitely was something, in this day and age and with what everyone’s going through in life right now, I’ve dealt with his experience over and over and over again of people trying to get to me and me allowing myself to let them get to me.
Things do get under my skin. Things have. And that’s why I felt the need to write the song.
Whatever the circumstances, both songs have really struck a chord with listeners. Listen for yourself with this new information in mind:
