Toronto’s Poop Café Dessert Bar will be offering an all-brown menu, in the shape of doo-doo. Owner Lien Nguyen told the Toronto Star,
“I’m trying to make poop cute.“
She first discovered the idea when she was visiting her mother in Taiwan,
“We checked out a toilet-themed restaurant and I just loved it. It’s funny to put food and poop together; it’s a great comparison. It stayed in my mind for a long time. As soon as I finished school, I said, ‘OK, I’m going to bring the restaurant to Toronto.’”
A restaurant management graduate, Nguyen says the menu will offer traditional Thai, Japanese and Korean desserts like patbingsoo (red beans with ice), as well as chocolate ice cream. Canadians are being asked to vote on the names for the menu. Diners will sit on fake toilets and eat their food out of lavatory and urinal-shaped dishes.
“[It’s] considered very disgusting, [something] you can’t talk about when you’re eating.”
Similar-themed restaurants have already opened in Russia, South Korea, the Philippines, China, Japan and Indonesia. The one that inspired Nguyen is called Modern Toilet and has been open since 2004. It has shower heads on the walls, plunger-shaped lampshades and a tiled floor. Diners relax on toilet seats with poop-shaped cushions.
Poop Café Dessert Bar is descriptive but a little too on the nose. What would you call your poo-themed eatery?
