“Endgame” made nearly half a billion dollars there already.
Avengers: Endgame‘s worldwide total reached $1.7 billion yesterday (although as you read this, it will have made millions more) putting it ahead of Jurassic World and the first two Avengers movies. And it looks likely that it’ll easily beat Titanic to be the 2nd highest-grossing movie ever.
But whether it will beat Avatar‘s $2.8 billion record as #1 isn’t assured. So far, audiences have been flocking to movie theaters around the planet. There are only four movies that have made more than Endgame at the global box office: Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Titanic, and Avatar.
Deadline reports that Endgame also might have distinction of being the biggest second weekend of all time, currently held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens which made $149 million in weekend 2. Breaking that record would be HUGE considering The Force Awakens‘ second weekend was over Christmas.
But even if the movie makes another billion+, the Washington Post says there’s one reason it will never really be bigger than Avatar; China.
“It has been responsible for $460 million of “Endgame” box office so far, more than double the $204 million “Avatar” took in there. But the Marvel movie has a major advantage in China that “Avatar” didn’t have when it came out — the country has been blanketed with movie theaters in the past decade.
There are now as estimated 60,000 movie screens in China. (The U.S. has 41,000.)
If you haven’t seen it already, will you add to Endgame‘s grosses and see it at your local movie theater this weekend? My friend owns ours, The Callicoon Theater, so I’m going. An ad for my upcoming art exhibit is playing before the movie, plus, I want to see Endgame on the big screen. Here’s the trailer.
Watch.
