Alex Hell said his five-year-old kid Max,, the eldest of three boys, was refused entry to St Peter Apostle Primary School in Melbourne last month after he reneged on a deal with the principal to change Max’s surname to Wembridge, his mother’s maiden name. The father suggested the name change because of the ridicule and scorn his surname – which he claims means “bright” or “light” in Austrian – attracted when he was in school. “Most kids in primary school probably wouldn’t know what hell meant but in the Catholic schools, heaven and hell is an issue,” Mr Hell said, apparently without sarcasm. But at the last minute, as Max was about to be enrolled, Alex Hell changed his mind. “I couldn’t do it, because that’s our name, our heritage, it’s who we are,” he said, apparently without periods. The school has agreed to accept Max with the surname Hell, but Alex Hell has now decided to explore less Catholic alternatives for his kid’s schooling. Meanwhile the five-year-old could probably pay for his own education as the spokeschild for Maxell products. (Source; t/y Eduardo)
