Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, two heavyweights of the pop-art genre, went canvas-to-canvas yesterday at Christie’s auction house in New York. Selling for a record $42.6 million, Lichtenstein’s Oh… Alright beat out Warhol’s Big Campbell’s Soup Can With Can Opener (Vegetable), which went for a comparatively paltry $23.8 million (experts had estimated it would fetch somewhere between 30 and 50). But the Warhol work definitely had the longer title, one that cleverly precludes anyone asking the clichéd, “What’s it s’posed to be?” (via NY Times)
