ART LA‘s VIP reception happened last night in a big way for a small show that was very tight, but also very white. Though there was a startling absence of any LA urban art, ART LA was filled with contemporary art bling. Euros were representing big time, with the best from across the Atlantic. And Berlin seems to sparkle as a lead contributor of interesting work, whether shown here in LA, in New York, or at Art Basel Miami Beach. As a matter of fact, many of the galleries at ART LA – like Peres Projects, Patrick Painter, Regen Projects, and Sandroni Rey – also had booths at the Miami show. But beyond Basel, ART LA is not a remix, it is its own show: way fun; and way well hung, too. (Plus there are no dead artists here). It’s a delightful frenzy of whimsy. Definitely a hot contemporary bet for those looking for new visions of our modern world. Sales were already taking off in a buying frenzy at last night’s soirée. The show runs till Sunday January 27 at The Santa Monica Civic Center.
