The infamous art dealer and artist Tony Shafrazi (who showed such greats as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring & Kenny Scharf) was supposedly mad as HELL when he had to wait in line opening of a hot downtown venue, Butterfly.
According to the NY Post, Shafrazi, screamed at the door staff,
“Do you know who I am? I was doing coke with The Beatles before you were born!”
NYC hotspot dudes-of-the-moment, Nur Khan and John McDonald named their latest venue Butterfly — after artist Damien Hirst‘s works that he donated to the space. It was packed with a hipster crowd including Amy Sacco, Justin Theroux and Vito Schnabel, whose family is a longtime pal of Shafrazi’s.
But Tony’s “coke” line (see what I did there?) didn’t seem to cut. it with the door staff and he stormed off.
Iranian-born Shafrazi is an art-world legend who met Andy Warhol on his first day in NYC, 50 years ago in 1969. In 1974, he defaced Picasso’s Guernica at MoMA with a can of red spray paint and as they say the rest is art history.
