Jazz is a musical genre that grew from blues and ragtime music. It started in African American communities in New Orleans in the 19th and 20th centuries. Throughout time there have been so many amazing jazz musicians a large number of whom were and are a part of the LGBTQ community.
Lea DeLaria who you may recognize from Orange Is the New Black has had a long musical background. She displayed her jazz musicality with the release of her jazz album ‘Play It Cool‘ in 2001. Check out the album below.
Billy Strayhorn was a jazz composer, pianist, and lyricist who worked with Duke Ellington for nearly 30 years. Strayhorn is credited for being the mastermind behind many of the hits from Ellington’s band.
Ethel Waters started as a blues singer and became a jazz singer gracing many stages, including Broadway. She sang in clubs with other notable singers like Bessie Smith.
