Some might see it as a sign of the beginning of the end of fashion…
Originally rumored to be thought of as “tacky” reality stars by Anna Wintour not so long ago, the Kardashians used to be persona non grata at the Met Gala.
But Wintour IS in charge and for the first time, the entire Kardashian/Jenner clan will attend including billionaire mogul Kim and boyfriend Pete Davidson; Kourtney, who will make her Met debut with fiancé Travis Barker, Khloé, Kris Jenner, model Kendall and baby billionaire Kylie Jenner.
A Condé Nast insider said,
Everyone is scheduled to go…”
Well, not EVERYONE.
- Travis Scott (Kylie’s baby daddy) has keeping a low profile since the November 2021 mass-casualty incident at AstroWorld
- Brother Rob currently embroiled in his court battle with former girlfriend Blac Chyna will not be there.
- Doubt we’ll see Caitlyn there either
- …or Kanye
Kim must have done SOMETHING to get in Wintour’s good graces as she’s been a regular at the Met ever since she graced the cover of Vogue in 2014. She was on again American Vogue again this February.
In March 2019 Wintour said,
I personally admire the way that she’s become a little more minimal in the way she’s dressing, and a little more covered.”
Just this week designer Tom Ford (& co-chair of the Gala) referenced two of Katy Perry’s Met Gala red carpet looks.
In the new book, Anna: The Biography, about famed Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Ford lamented the the costume-y nature of recent Met galas.
“The only thing about the Met that I wish hadn’t happened is that it’s turned into a costume party.
That used to just be very chic people wearing beautiful clothes going to an exhibition about the 18th century. You didn’t have to look like the 18th century, you didn’t have to dress like a hamburger, you didn’t have to arrive in a van where you were standing up because you couldn’t sit down because you wore a chandelier.”
The theme for this year’s is In America: An Anthology of Fashion, celebrating the museum’s new exhibition of the same name, presented across 13 of the American period rooms. The dress code is: Gilded Glamour. It’s part two of the museum’s celebration of American style; part one, titled In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, opened in September 2021 and will remain on display in The Met until September 5.
The Met Gala livestream will be hosted by Vogue editor at large Hamish Bowles, actor and singer Vanessa Hudgens, and actor and TV personality La La Anthony.
An Anthology of Fashion opens on May 7. You can live stream the Met Gala red carpet arrivals here tomorrow.
