Pete Doherty, with both his heart and drug-repellent implant in apparent fine fettle, was feeling kind of like a wacky old German when he took to the stage at the On3 music festival in Munich on Saturday and broke into an impromptu rendition of the long-banned first verse of the German national anthem, “Das Deutschlandlied,” the verse that was sung with vigor at rallies for Hitler and the Nazis. Apparently, not cool. Doherty was yanked from the stage by the festival organizers after he’d sung five more numbers, but a radio station airing the show live cut the broadcast immediately when Doherty started the “Deutschland…” lyrics.
The musician’s spokeswoman said he’d meant no offense and was unaware of the anthem’s controversy. “He wanted to celebrate his appearance in Munich by assimilating and integrating with the crowd,” she said. “Something he tries do wherever he goes.” And so well. (via NME)
