Tonight, Tom Brokaw, 64, steps down as anchor of NBC’s evening news, and the teenaged-by-comparison Brian Williams, 45, will step in. It’s like “The king is dead! Long live the king!” only different. Then, in March, the mildly disgraced, homespun 73-year-old Dan Rather, who replaced America’s most-trusted man, Walter Cronkite, back in 1981, leaves the CBS news desk, with no apparent pretender to the throne, but it may be one of those miked reporters who stand on the lawn in front of the White House in the rain. Or Diane Sawyer, who’s not interested. Pretentious windbag Peter Jennings, 66, over at ABC is staying put and news-anchor junkies, missing their familiar fixes at NBC and CBS, are expected to flock to his camp, which could make the ABC news’ ratings rock as hard as the net’s Lost and Desperate Housewives. We’ve seen Brian Williams sub for Brokaw many times, always full-frontal toward the camera, looking not uncute. But ever seen him in profile? Oops. It’s like – remember? – seeing your 5th-grade teacher with her glasses off. Is that superficial of us? What? You think we watch the news for the news? Anyway, all the boring details are in USA Today today.
