Amy Cooper who was captured on cellphone video in May calling the police and falsely accusing a Black man of threatening her life, will be charged by Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
Manhattan DA Cy Vance announced Monday that Cooper will be charged with a misdemeanor for falsely reporting an incident in the third degree, which is punishable with up to a year in jail,
“At this time I would like to encourage anyone who has been the target of false reporting to contact our Office. We are strongly committed to holding perpetrators of this conduct accountable.”
According to The New York Times, Cooper was issued a desk appearance ticket and will be arraigned in early October; if convicted, she will be given a conditional discharge, community service or counseling as opposed to jail time.
Cooper called the police on Black bird watcher Christian Cooper saying that he was threatening her life after he asked her to put a leash on her dog in Central Park.
Christian Cooper’s video of the incident went viral. Cooper has since said, though he accepted a public apology from Amy, who was swiftly fired from her position at Franklin Templeton investment firm the following day.
“The act was unmistakably racist.”
A video of the incident posted to social media quickly gained traction and sparked national conversations about race and policing days before the death of George Floyd.
Cooper is heard saying hysterically in the video,
“I’m in the Ramble, there is a man, African-American, he has a bicycle helmet and he is recording me and threatening my dog.
I am being threatened by a man in the Ramble, please send the cops immediately!”
Hard to feel sorry for her, the woman ruined her own life. Let it be a lesson to Karen’s everywhere.
