Heidi Ewing worked at WOW back in the late ’90s as an associate producer on the clip shows TV Latino for Channel 4 in the UK, Latin Beat for the BBC, and Shock Video 3 for HBO. Now she’s codirected a documentary with Rachel Grady called The Boys of Baraka, which follows a group of 12- and 13-year-old kids who were plucked from the ghettos of Baltimore to live for two years in a boarding school in Kenya. Fenton Bailey says the doc is “on the Academy shortlist.” Next up for Ewing: Jesus Camp, a documentary about a summer camp that breeds junior Billy Grahams.
And there’s the delightful Wash Westmoreland aka Wash West aka Bud Light, who directed the controversial and award-winning doc Gay Republicans for WOW. His latest film, Quinceañera, will be screened in dramatic competition at the 2006 Sundance festival. Co-written and directed with Richard Glatzer, Quinceañera is about two Latinos coming of age in LA’s Echo Park, a section of the city quickly becoming gentrified by the gays.
