With all this World Cup nonsense clogging up the sports pages these days, let’s take a second to reflect on what happened on this date in 1974. In what was quite possibly the highest high in the pantheon of sport, Pittsburg Pirates right-hander Doc Ellis hurled a complete-game no-hitter while under the influence of LSD. As Doc himself said in a 1980 interview, “The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes, sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn’t. Sometimes I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder. They say I had about three to four fielding chances. I remember diving out of the way of a ball I thought was a line drive. I jumped, but the ball wasn’t hit hard and never reached me.” I’d like to see those soccer goofs try and match that.
