September 2, 2004/New York City: Last night’s FAIR (Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting, http://www.fair.org) protest demonstration against biased political media coverage (New York Post, Fox News, ad nauseum.) on Times Square brought Manhattan drag queens Lady Bunny, Linda Simpson, and Miss Understood to the frontlines. High point: a confrontation with the hate-filled, Times Square fixtures, the Black Israelites! They, screaming at Bunny that she is the Devil! She, screaming back that them (channeling Flip Wilson), “The Devil made me buy this dress!,” plus crowd pleasing zingers like, “Honey, looks like we ain’t the only ones wearin’ dresses (pointing to their platform) [snap!] and “Ah, excuse me, the casting call for the remake of “Mutant Ninja Turtles is that way!” all punctuated with Wigstock-dancer style swoops and swirls.
