If you were once an assistant to Fidel Castro and his brother Raul and were blabbing secrets of the Cuban dictator on TV, would you live in Miami? The former assistant, Delfin Fernandez, decided to defect to Spain in 1999 while on an errand to drop off Raul’s daughter in Italy and pick up a Rotweiller in Germany for Fidel. Some errand. He moved to Miami two years ago and is now a walking tell-all. Did you know, for example, that Raul and Fidel have some 300 cars between them, their families, and bodyguards? Or that Fidel likes to travel in a six-or-seven-car motorcade to confound possible assassins? The eighty-year-old Fidel is health-obsessed and had a multimillion-dollar hospital built on the grounds of his estate, says Fernandez. Also the dictator is especially fond of ham, and once had his assistant pick up $2,500-worth of the product in Spain. And speaking of the seat of power, Fidel has his underwear burned to sabotage assassination plots involving chemicals on laundry day. What? Death by itching powder?
