On a 14-hour flight from San Francisco to Auckland, artist Nina Katchadourian decided the best way to pass the time would be by taking multiple trips to the bathroom, adorning herself with paper towels, and creating self-portraits in the style of 15th-century Flemish art. “I spontaneously put a toilet seat cover on my head [Ed: AS YOU DO] and looked in the mirror and thought, wow, I look like a painting. It was like an extreme form of improvisation,” she writes on her website. “I was wearing a thin black scarf that I sometimes hung up on the wall behind me to create the deep black ground that is typical of these portraits. There is no special illumination in use other than the lavatory’s own lights and all the images are shot hand-held with the camera phone.” Gorgeous. (via Daily Mail)
