We’ve been following the Absolutely Fabulous movie since it was announced but now creator/star Jennifer Saunders has made real by finally announcing a release date — July 1, 2016. (In the UK and Ireland, anyway.) She confirmed the news on Twitter.
The film centers around Edina and Patsy retreating penniless to the French Riviera, plotting to live large once again after getting mixed up in a major media storm. Barry Humphries — famous for his on stage character Dame Edna Everage — says that he just finished filming. However, rather than make a cameo as Dame Edna, Humphries will play “the sleazy old boyfriend of Patsy”…
“Last weekend I was in Nice with Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley for their new Ab Fab movie. I played a small but striking role as the sleazy old boyfriend of Patsy at a pool party festooned with Russian babes. My usual theatrical work is rather solitary, so this was a heart-warming tonic.”
No Dame Edna, but it will feature some 100+ drag queens. In October, they were on the hunt for eight singing, dancing queens to perform individually, 70 for the audience, and 18 celebrity lookalikes including Cher (Chad Michaels, did they call?), Christina Aguilera and Tammy Wynette. We know for sure UK drag superstars Charlie Hides and La Voix made the cut. Lulu, Emma Bunton, Kate Moss and possibly Joan Collins are also set to appear.
