The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is turning a klieg light on director John Waters with a new exhibit…
From the iconic Pink Flamingos and Desperate Living, to Cry Baby and Serial Mom, the “Pope of Trash” has given us 50+ years of movie mayhem and madness.
And starting on Sept. 17 you can take a trip through the director’s “complete filmography,” with over 400 items, including,
handwritten scripts, costumes, props, posters, correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, and film clips.”

The extensive film program will include the filmmaker’s very earliest works, along with his biggest hits like Polyester and Hairspray.
Academy Museum curators Jenny He and Dara Jaffe write about their exhibition,
Known for pushing the boundaries of ‘good taste,’ Waters has created a canon of high shock-value, high-entertainment movies that have cemented his position as one of the most revered independent auteurs in the history of American movies.“
John Waters: Pope of Trash will be on view at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures from September 17, 2023 through August 4, 2024.
