The other night in New York, Laura Albert and Savannah Knoop appeared together in public for the first time since their literary ruse was exposed in 2005. You’ll remember, of course, that it was Albert who wrote the popular books attributed to fictional male author JT Leroy, and it was Knoop who portrayed Leroy at events in blonde wig and sunglasses (pictured). At Robert Wilson’s gallery show in Chelsea, Albert and Knoop denied that their hoax was a hoax. “I don’t think you can use that word for something so sublime,” said Knoop. “For me,” said Albert, “JT was never a hoax. And people say, ‘Well, why don’t you apologize.’ What for? Because you bought a book? Because you were moved by the words? …We never sat there and said, ‘Ha ha, we’re tricking people.'” (Page Six)
