As openly gay U.S. Representative Jared Polis added to the condemnations of Obama’s disastrous defense of DOMA, several other prominent LGBT activists announced they would no longer attend a planned DNC fundraiser in protest of Obama’s DOMA brief. The Washington Blade plans to “stake out” the event and photograph any noted gays brave enough to enter the increasingly taboo fundraiser. This led the Obama administration to hit the damage control button last night and hastily announced that they will now offer benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees. Unfortunately, the measure will NOT cover health benefits (that would go against DOMA) and the president will NOT be signing an executive order to initiate benefits. This new federal partner benefit plan is simply an administrative memorandum – and what little it offers will expire the minute Obama leaves office. And to make matters worse (but crystal clear) administration officials admitted that the timing of the announcement was intended to help contain the increasing outrage among gay rights organizations.
