Marika Rökk, huh? Who knew? Until yesterday, I’d never even HEARD of Teutonic icon. From what I gather, she was HUGE in Nazi-era Germany and starred in several of Hitler’s propaganda films, but WHATEVER, nobody seems to hold that against her because, well, she’s FAAAAAAABULOUS, and that was all WELL IN THE PAST by 1958 when she made the classic Bühne frei für Marika. In the number we’re about to watch, she plays a world-weary space alien in a gorgeous beaded jumpsuit who sings “Mir ist so Langweilig” (translation: “I’m so bored”) while a bunch of little green men do the “Smooth Criminal” dance behind her. Then she hops in her spaceship and travels to the African jungle (of course) where she boogies with some local tribesman. It doesn’t make much sense, but good lord is it fun to watch.
