At the beginning of the Cats featurette below, director Tom Hooper solemnly looks into the camera and says: “At the center of this incredibly entertaining, comedic, fantastical musical is a very timely story about the importance of inclusion and redemption.”
Has he ever SEEN Cats? It’s literally a few silly children’s poems strung together with no plot and certainly no overriding message of inclusion. Maaaaaaybe you can say the uber-schmaltzy finale song “Memory” is about redemption and the need to be accepted by the other cats… but it’s ONE SONG. Everything else is just an excuse for Taylor and Jennifer and Idris and Rebel to wiggle around and show off the movie’s… *checks notes*…. “digital fur technology.”
DIGITAL FUR TECHNOLOGY? THEY AREN’T EVEN GOING TO BE IN FURRY BODYSUITS? WHAT… IS… THE… POINT… IF… WE… DON’T… GET… IDRIS’S BULGE?
Also, why on EARTH would they cast 30-something Jennifer Hudson as Grizabella the Glamour Cat when THEY’VE GOT JUDI DENCH IN THE CAST? What a lost opportunity!
I swear, if this hairball gets nominated for an Oscar next year, I give up.
The featurette isn’t just a teaser for the film, but a teaser for a teaser: At the end of the clip, a card announces that a trailer for the movie is due Friday. Swift has also been promoting the impending trailer from her social media accounts.
Cats will be in movie theatres December 20 with Hudson as Grizabella, Swift as Bombalurina, James Corden as Bustopher Jones, Judi Dench as Old Deuteronomy, Jason Derulo as Rum Tum Tugger, Idris Elba as Macavity, and Rebel Wilson as Jennyanydots.
