Arrow

By James St. James on October 11, 2012 11:38 am

So I watched Arrow last night. The gist of it: Billionaire playboy Oliver Queen is shipwrecked on a deserted island for five years where he hones the archery skills he needs to help him take down his enemies once he is rescued. So basically it’s Batman meets Castaway meets Revenge (or The Scarlet Pimpernel meets Robinson Crusoe meets The Count of Monte Cristo depending on your age and literary references). The most striking thing about the show, of course, is Stephen Amell’s abs. They are spectacular. They steal every scene right out from under the poor guy. You can’t concentrate on the plot because they’re weirdly moving independently of one and other. Undulating. Rippling. Like a living reef on the ocean of his body. When he has his shirt on, however, Stephen Amell is actually rather bland. Don’t get me wrong – he’s gorgeous. But totally forgettable. Like a minor One Tree Hill character. And the best thing I can say about his acting is that he’s a good jumper. Yeah. He’s REALLY good at leaping off rooftops. He points his feet like a circus performer, and tucks his knees up to his chest and it’s EXHILERATING to watch. That’s probably what sold him to the casting directors, because lord knows it wasn’t his emoting skills. I hope his acting gets better. And I hope I learn to fall in love with more than his abs (and cute little nipples). One final quibble: REALLY CW? You had to have Oliver Queen live in the Luthor mansion from Smallville? You didn’t think we’d notice? It’s only been off the air a year! You couldn’t spring for a different set? Anyway. Did anyone else watch it? What did you think? (Bonus points for discussing Deathstroke’s mask on the island. NERDGASM!)
