SCURVY, indeed darlings! February 22, 2010 will forever be a staple of television herstory as it’s the first time Snatch Game was introduced on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 2. Now, everyone’s favorite challenge on the popular show – and it’s ninth season is about to commence in March – it was as legendary then as it is now.
Check it out:
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: This spring, RuPaul’s Drag Race will begin its 9th season; add to that two all-star ventures, and that’s a whole lotta drag queens. With the show having been such a groundbreaking and now venerable hit, many of the show’s younger fans only hopped onboard in the middle of the series’ run. There are children walking in nature who don’t know, for example, the glory of a Nina Flowers season 1 makeup extravaganza. Or the glories of the Raven-Tatiana feud in season 2. Most importantly, anyone who missed season 2 missed the inception of the show’s greatest creation: the Snatch Game.
Snatch Game is what it sounds like: a parody of the old Match Game game show, only this time instead of Richard Dawson and Charles Nelson Reilly as panelists, it’s the Drag Race queens doing their best celebrity impressions. As the seasons have gone on, and Snatch Game became a staple of every season, the challenge became a fantastic way of separating the contenders from the pretenders. Not every queen who excelled at the Snatch Game went on to win their season, but to date, every winning queen has done well at Snatch Game … except for one. Cue season 2.
Snatch Game is where the queens with senses of humor, intelligence, and personality separate themselves from the queens who can merely serve face. In the season 2 version, there are many more of the latter than the former. There are also plenty of ghosts of Snatch Game past who would go on to haunt future queens. Let the lesson go forth: never attempt Lady Gaga (as Sonique does here) or Beyoncé (as Tyra Sanchez does here). And if you’re going to attempt Whitney Houston (as the late Sahara Davenport does here), please bring some energy.
The standouts in the inaugural Snatch Game were Tatiana — whose Britney Spears was dumb and funny — and Pandora Boxx’s Carol Channing, who went the route that too few queens do: appealing to RuPaul’s old-school pop-culture tastes.
As an Snatch Game on its own, the season 2 installment showed more promise than payoff. But as a moment in time where history was made, this Snatch Game was as important a TV show as [BLANK]. Britney?
