Gordon D. Sondland, the American ambassador to the European Union, now in deep doo-doo in Ukarian-Gate, has a great big Portland connection which intersects with my life, two degrees removed.
POTUS and his Gollum-like attorney Rudolph William Louis Giuliani, eager for the Ukrainian government to investigate Hunter Biden‘s business dealings with a Ukrainian company that paid him as much as $50,000 a month at a time when his father, Joe Biden, then vice president, was in charge of overseeing relations with the Ukraine.
Although it is not a member of the EU, Ukraine was a hot topic for Sondland, closely involved with the Diapered Draft Dodger president’s phone call to President Volodymyr Zelensky where POTUS repeatedly pressured the Ukrainian president to investigate the Bidens. Sondland discussed that phone call with the Ukrainian media. Sondland:
“I spoke with both of them before and after this conversation. The conversation was very successful. They found a common language immediately.”
His dealings with Ukraine now make him a key player in the impeachment inquiry.
Provenance Hotels, a company he founded, owns or operates six Portland properties, including the historic Heathman Hotel, Hotel Lucia and Hotel deLuxe. He served as CEO of Provenance before joining the State Department.
Boys’ Fort, The Husband’s shop in Downtown Portland, designed a floor of suites at the Hotel Sentinel, also a Provenance property. Boys’ Fort also did a pop-up shop in The Sentinel, in 2014, as well as a luxury suite at Hotel Lucia. The Husband has asked me to let readers know that they are horrified by the connection; they had no way of knowing when they did their work or their pop-up. Boys are anti-fascist.
Sondland spends most of his time in Portland. His wife lives here, and his two children grew up in Portland. Yet, Sondland’s voting address is at the Hotel Theodore, one of his Seattle properties his company. The wife lives in a $2.5 million home in the West Hills, the Bel Aire of Portland.
He and his wife have given away millions of dollars over the past three decades, most of it in Portland. In 2008, the couple gave $1 million to give children free admission to the Portland Art Museum; in 2009, their foundation gave $50,000 to save summer concerts in the Portland parks; they recently gave $50,000 to the Oregon Harbor of Hope, which helps the homeless. They also gave $1.5 million to Duke University, so their son could go to school there.
Sondland and his wife are big fans of writer Ayn Rand, the mother of Objectivism, a philosophy that Ran describes as:
“The concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute“.
Although his wife is a registered Democrat, they both appear to be pretty politically pliable. In the summer of 2016, after Benedict Donald won the GOP nomination, Sondland pulled out of a scheduled Seattle fundraiser after the GOP nominee savaged a Muslim American military family. Yet, Sondland donated $1 million to the Boiled Ham in a Wig’s inauguration, but not in his own name but through his company. He is active in Portland and Oregon State politics, except in the best way; he doesn’t vote here, he votes in Washington.
In damage control mode, Provenance Hotels has removed Sondland’s name from their website and replaced it with his wife’s name, Katherine Durant.
My wonderful Congressperson Earl Blumenauer urged travelers to boycott Provenance Hotels. Blumenauer:
“Anyone who cares about America should not do any business or stay at any of Gordon Sondland’s hotels. Not until he fulfills his duty as a citizen to testify and turn over all relevant documents to the House of Representatives. Nobody is above the law. Mr. Sondland and the entire Trump administration need to be reminded of that.”
I am not happy with idea of all those house cleaners, porters, desk clerks and other staff of the hotel losing income, but I am in favor of calling out Sonderland for his part in dismantling democracy.
