Rapper 50 Cent furthered his ongoing beef with Lee Daniels’ Empire today by sharing this post to his 6.5 million followers on Instagram which blames the show’s recent dip in ratings on “extra gay stuff.” The post was originally put up by the mysterious account @theindustryonblast_, who has since deleted the image.
TMZ later reported that 50’s rep claimed he “missed the part about the drop in ratings being due to the show’s ‘gay stuff'” (which is a central part of the show’s plot and surely part of its huge appeal to LGBT people). He then deleted the post once he saw the homophobic comments attached to it, and according to his rep, “The comments were not a reflection of his views at all.” Tbh I’m not exactly sure how that part could be missed.
It may be that 50 is extra salty because Empire’s achievements have overshadowed that of 50’s own Starz program, Power. But the truth remains that 50 has quite a complicated history with homophobia—especially demonstrated on the Internet. In 2009, he called the Fame Kills tour by Kanye West & Lady GaGa “the gay tour,” but perhaps he was just bitter when Kanye West’s Graduation album crushed 50 cent’s Curtis when they released on the same day in a much-hyped coinciding release date.
In a 2010 interview with Vibe magazine, 50 claimed to be on board with gay marriage: “I think everyone should be happy. I think a fool is going to go against same sex marriage at this point…I’m up for it…I don’t have personal feelings towards it because I’m not involved in that lifestyle. I want people to be happy. It makes for everything to be better.” But then, he pretty much eradicated any positive impact that would have had with this ignorant remark later in the interview: “So in process, we need organizations for straight men. We do. We need organizations for straight men in the case you’ve been on the elevator and somebody decides they want to grab your little buns.”
Then, there was this Tweet he posted just a week after Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi committed suicide:
If you a man and your over 25 and you don't eat pu**y just kill your self damn it. The world will be a better place. Lol
