I keep seeing postings gleefully urging Hurricane Dorian to PLOW intoMar-a-Lago, Trump’s prized South Florida resort.
It’s is projected to make landfall as a Category 4 hurricane on Labor Day, 115 miles north of Palm Beach, where the ocean-front hotel is situated. But Mar-a-Lago remains in the “cone of uncertainty”, a range of potential paths that the hurricane could go as it gains strength in the Caribbean.
The Secret Service declined to respond to questions about any security measures taken at Mar-a-Lago during an extreme weather event.
Trump tweeted he’s monitoring the storm, warning Floridians it was headed their way.
“It will be a very big Hurricane, perhaps one of the biggest!”
Hurricane Dorian looks like it will be hitting Florida late Sunday night. Be prepared and please follow State and Federal instructions, it will be a very big Hurricane, perhaps one of the biggest!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 29, 2019
Here’s 4 reasons why it would be VERY bad if a hurricane hit Mar-a-Lago:
- IT’S HISTORY & BEAUTY: The property was developed and built by heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post in 1927 designed by Marion Sims Wyeth. All in, with Joseph Urban‘s interior design and exterior decorations, it cost $7 million ($90 million today) and features 58 bedrooms, 33 bathrooms, 12 fireplaces, and three bomb shelters. Post, who died in 1973, willed the 17-acre estate to the U.S. government as a Winter White House for presidents and visiting foreign dignitaries. Trump offered the Post family $15 million for it, but they rejected it, and he ended up getting the property for $7 million in 1985, after some shady maneuvering. He then renovated the estate, adding a 20,000-square-foot ballroom, five clay tennis courts and a waterfront pool. It is a National Historic Landmark.
- HE HAS INSURANCE: Although, I’m sure he’d figure out a way to cheat and get taxpayers to foot the bill. Guests of the resort WERE forced to evacuate during Hurricane Irma in 2017 and Trump claimed the property sustained $17 million in damage during the awful 2005 hurricane season. But an A/P investigation found little evidence his club took a hit.
- HE’D MILK IT FOR SYMPATHY (& VOTES) If Dorian hit it, we’d never hear the end of it, would we? OMG. No, his base would go nuts and we’d look bad for celebrating.
- HE’S NOT THERE: Damn.
