“It came true!” cooed Anne Hathaway to her Oscar statuette back in 2013… and the world collectively retched.
Her Best Supporting Actress win came after a looooong awards season in which the Les Miz actress actively (and rather relentlessly) campaigned for it, often telling reporters about the intense filming process – how she cut her hair, lost weight, sang live (!!!!!), and was always on the brink of total exhaustion.
And it worked. She won. But at what cost? She now says her Oscar win actually made her miserable.
“I felt very uncomfortable,” she tells Vanity Fair. “I kind of lost my mind doing that movie and it hadn’t come back yet.”
“I had to stand up in front of people and feel something I don’t feel, which is uncomplicated happiness. It’s an obvious thing, you win an Oscar and you’re supposed to be happy. I didn’t feel that way. I felt wrong that I was standing there in a gown that cost more than some people are going to see in their lifetime, and winning an award for portraying pain that still felt very much a part of our collective experience as human beings. I tried to pretend that I was happy and I got called out on it, big time. That’s the truth and that’s what happened. It sucks. But what you learn from it is that you only feel like you can die from embarrassment, you don’t actually die.”
Of course many ONTD commenters are calling her out for her richgirl, celebrity privilege shame spiral…
aw, the existential angst of the 1%. so relatable!
she is trying so hard to reach goop levels of aggressively unlikeable
yeah right she campaigned so embarrassingly hard for it, don’t be pulling this bs
what kind of first world problem damn
I wish these celebrities would just shut up and wear the clothes. It’s a fantasy and they’re a walking billboard to sell scarves and perfume, no one cares about their little moral crisis.
What do YOU think? Does she have a legit reason to be upset, or is this the kind of thing you keep to yourself?
The scene that won her the Oscar…
And never forget:
