YouTuber and makeup influencer James Charles had a special surprise for his parents. He paid off their home mortgage!
Charles grew up in Bethlehem, New York, but is now based in LA, where he he just bought a $7 million mansion. His estimated $22 million fortune was amassed just since he launched his makeup focussed YouTube channel in 2015. At age 15.
Charles came out to his parents at 12 and says they were very supportive, both about his sexuality and his wanting to start beauty vlogging at such a young age.
His dad is a self-employed contractor and was been badly hit by the economic impact of COVID, as were a LOT of small businesses. In the past James offered his Dad of a new truck, but he turned it down as well as an offer from James to buy them a home closer to him in California.
James flew from LA to New York for the big reveal. He assured his viewers he had gotten not one but two COVID tests, both negative, 24 hours before.
Charles’ rise to fame has not been controversy-free. He has fought publicly with other internet figures like Tati Westbrook and Jeffrey Star. And he made some bad Ebola joke he later apologized for. (No excuses, but he IS VERY young…)
Despite any online backlash, he still has a huge following with nearly 25 million subscribers and his latest video has over 6 million views.
In the beginning of the 14-minute clip he talks a LOT about his parents and family life. If you’d rather get to the surprise part (and Dad’s tears!) skip to 9:50.
(No, YOU’RE CRYING…)
