Noted film critic Peter K. Rosenthal examines the new Hunger Games movie and assesses the hotness of the boys in the cast.
Francis Lawrence, director of Catching Fire, the second installment of the Hunger Games series (out November 22), discusses righting the wrongs of his predecessor in New York magazine:
Will you be using the shaky cam, like in the first movie?
No! [Laughs.] No shaky cam. I think a lot of people will be happy to hear that.
The first film skimped a little on showing us the strategy behind the Katniss-Peeta love story.
I felt the same. I felt the love story in general was, um, a bit buried in the first one. I wanted to bring the love story to the surface. And when I say love story, I mean the triangle.
Will this one have better CGI?
Uh, yeah. I think the effects are phenomenal. If you know the book, there’s a monkey-mutt attack, and Weta, who did Rise of the Planet of the Apes and King Kong, did the monkeys for us.
Is Peeta [Josh Hutcherson] still going to be the shortest person onscreen?
[Laughs.] No. No, he’s not.
It’s fine, actors can step on boxes.
[Laughs.] He and Jen get much closer in height when she’s in flats, which is a good thing. You throw her in some heels, and it’s all over. (Photo: Pacific Coast News)
Josh Hutcherson is TINY. The boy’s a HOBBIT. WHOOOOEEEE. That boy is SO SHORT, he has to cuff his underwear. He’s SO SHORT, his first job was modeling for trophies. We’re talking SMALL. How small? Josh Hutcherson is SO SMALL he can hang glide on a Dorito. He’s SO SMALL he has to stand on four phone books to blow your dad. BOOM! THAT’S how small Josh Hutcherson is. *Drops mike* (via Finn the Human)
After the biggest casting search since Scarlett O’Hara, Zap2it is reporting that British actor Sam Clafin has been cast as the golden-haired Lothario Finnick Odair in the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire. Clafin is most famous for his recent turns in Snow White and the Huntsman and Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides. This news comes hot on the heels of today’s announcement that Amanda Plummer had gotten the role of Wiress and Jenna Malone is in the running to play snotty tribute Johanna Mason. Variety is also reporting that Melissa Leo and Tony Shaloub are up for key Catching Fire roles as well. Leo is sought for the part of Mags, the ancient tribute who’s an ally of Finnick, while Shalhoub would play Beetee, a former Games winner from District 3. Filming is set to begin this summer. It’ll arrive in theaters on Nov. 22, 2013.
Lainey Gossip continues to have the inside scoop on the Catching Fire casting process, saying today that even though Garrett Hedlund is still in the the lead to play Finnick, they’ve also brought in Sam Clafin to read for the part. Sam, you’ll recall, was ALMOST hot as Prince William in Snow White and the Huntsman, but then turned out to be TOTALLY NOT, so I’m sticking with Garrett on the Finnick front. HOWEVER, then Lainey oh-so-casually dropped THIS bombshell: “My sources tell me they are seriously considering Cicely Tyson for the role of Mags.” Which is the MOST FABULOUS casting news since Faye Dunaway was cast as Joan Crawford, if you ask me. Mags, according to the Hunger Games Wiki, is described as “an eighty-year-old woman who babbles every time she talks. Katniss believes it is because of a possible stroke she may have had in the past.” A couple months ago, I suggested they ought to get Kim Cattrall for the part, and GET HER THAT OSCAR, damnit. Or possibly cast the woman who played Miss Blankenship on Mad Men. Anybody but Betty White. Please no Betty White. I had never EVEN CONSIDERED Cicely Tyson, but my GOD that would be PERFECT. She’s been ancient since I was a child, OF COURSE she could play Mags. She could play Mags in HER SLEEP. People need to start tweeting about this idea AND MAKE IT HAPPEN!
