According to Sky News: “The opening slot is traditionally reserved for a world premiere but the lavish period drama has already been screened across the US. This is seen by some as a increasingly cosy relationship between Hollywood and the festival which was once the home of low-budget films.”. You’d never know it from the crowd reaction though. They went BANANAS when the AAA-list stars appeared at a photocall today. Carey Mulligan looks GORGEOUS in a strapless jumpsuit by Balenciaga – like a big black tongue is licking her torso! Leonardo DiCaprio poses with Baz Luhrman, and at first I was all excited because I thought Baz was wearing a harness. On closer inspection, though, it’s just a cardigan. Juror Nicole Kidman looked flawless (BELL SLEEVES!). Steven Spielberg, who is serving as jury president of this year’s Cannes, wore a ’20s-inspired newsboy cap; Isla Fischer, who plays the doomed Myrtle, was looking STUNNING; and Toby looked like he just escaped from the sanitarium. young Hollywood up and comers The Great Gatsby Leonardo diCaprio celebrity lookalike Callan McAuliffe Callan, who plays the young Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby, and weirdly looks more like a young Leonardo than Leonardo did at the same age, opens up to Glow magazine about working on the lavish production. “It was an incredible experience to say the least. I have a strong role in flashback as Young Jay. It was an honor to be involved in such a production…. Leo is a terrific guy. Baz is talented and creative and incredible to work with. My only stories would relate to how do you turn a brunette (me) into a blonde, blue-eyed Young Gatsby. I had about seven eye appointments for hand painted lenses to match Leo’s eyes and they bleached my hair several times to get from brunette to blonde. The pre-production on this film was brilliant. I actually enjoyed watching the incredible detail they put into my role and the time spent to ensure that the cross between Leo and myself was flawless.” And flawless it was. I literally gasped when I realized it was another actor on the screen and not Leo, so seamless was the flashback. (via Just Jared)

Tiffany & Co. the takeaway The Great Gatsby Prada fashion Carey Mulligan I’ll save my nitpicking for this week’s podcast. Suffice it to say, The Great Gatsby is a SPECTACLE, a dazzling feast for the eyes. Every inch of every frame is STUFFED with orgasmic little details. This dress, for instance, elicited an audible gasp from the audience. Miuccia Prada made it, I believe, and those jewels look like they weigh a ton. Can you imagine how fantastic you’d feel wearing it? The heavier the outfit, the more fabulous the party, I always say. The pear-and-blue-diamond headband from Tiffany’s is nothing to sneeze at, either. ”I was wearing a lot of jewelry that was very, very expensive,” she told Harper’s Bazaar, “and I had a man following me around making sure I didn’t steal anything.” According to ONTD: “The luxury jeweler created an extraordinary collection of platinum-set diamonds and pearls for Mulligan to wear in the film, inspired by the art deco aesthetic of the flapper era – perfect for champagne-soaked soirées at Jay Gatsby’s West Egg mansion.” In addition to that priceless headband you see in this picture, Carey wears a blue sapphire ring with diamonds set in platinum, worth $66,300, a hand ornament with freshwater pearls and diamonds set in platinum, worth $83,000, and a Tanzanite ring with diamonds set in platinum, $30,200.
