The Charisma News – which is NOT a newspaper geared toward people with Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent, rather an organization that provides news, analysis, prophetic commentary and teachings for charismatic and Pentecostal Christians – is reporting that students at the University of San Diego, a Catholic college, are protesting a drag show held on campus “mceed by Manila Luzon, a professional drag queen and openly homosexual man who advocates same-sex ‘marriage.’” Quote, unquote. (I love that they put “marriage” in quotations.) Students opposing the show are holding a prayer vigil on campus at Plaza Menor starting at 6:30 tonight, if you happen to be in the area and feel like joining. Or throwing tomatos. In addition, members of the Catholic community will protest at the main entrances to the Catholic university. ”This event affects all of us here on this campus,” says Ailsa Tirado, a USD sophomore. ”It misleads the participants, students, society and the body of Christ by telling us that cross-dressing and acting upon disordered sexual preference are in line with Catholic social teaching. That is not the truth.” Carmen Vasquez, USD’s vice president of student affairs, disagrees and claims that the drag show IS consistent with Catholic teachings. “The show as scheduled violates neither the university’s mission nor any university policies. The celebration of gender expression supports the Church’s teaching on the dignity of the human person and does not promote either behavior or lifestyle that is contrary to the teachings of the Church,” she says. And as for Manila, she just tweeted: “What does one perform when u hve thousands forming a prayer vigil against ur show?” Hmmm. Might I suggest opening with “Like a Prayer”? Followed by “Losing My Religion.” Then, for good measure, be sure to rip up a picture of the pope!

From HuffPo: “Despite being sentenced to two years of prison on charges of hooliganism, the Russian punk trio has released a new song. ‘Putin Lights Up the Fire’ is in Russian, and The Guardian debuted the song with a video montage of the band and their fans.”
Well, our Pussy Riot protest was a resounding success, as you can see from the photos here. Are they free yet? They ought to be the way we marched and yelled and carried on. The combined fury of seven whole people, it really brings a lump to your throat. And as is so often the case with demonstrations in LA, the media outnumbered the protestors. Thank you to Channel 4, Tom Andrews, and (omg my FAVORITE) NBC’s Gordon Tokumatsu. And look, there’s a picture on the NBC4 webpage! (Photos: Tom Andrews via Flickr and Thairin Smothers)
When we went to the official Free Pussy Riot homepage yesterday to see when and where we should be marching, we discovered that LA is, like, THE ONLY CITY IN THE WORLD that doesn’t have an officially organized protest. Seriously: Belgrade, Murmansk, Oslo, Portland, Prague, Toulouse, Västerås, Vilinus, Warsaw – virtually EVERY MAJOR CITY IN THE WORLD. Except us. So Thairin and I are throwing (?) a protest on the corner of Cherokee and Hollywood Boulevard tomorrow, 10:00 AM SHARP. If you’re in the Hollywood area, bring your pastel-colored ski masks and whatever signage you can whip up and let’s scream so loud Putin hears us. Go to our Facebook page here. So far, I’m excited to say, wowlebrities Sean DeLear, Ginger Coyote, and Chanel Perrillo have all RSVP’d. So please come!
Bright colors, of course, are all the rage these days. And so, coincidentally, is rage. Look how nicely the two dovetail together! Yesterday, the ever-fabulous Peaches filmed a video in Berlin for her Free Pussy Riot protest song, and invited fans to don masks and neon colors, and march down Oderberger Strasse into Mauerpark. Everyone chanted “WE ARE ALL PUSSY RIOT!,” and bemused the tourists, then Peaches laid an egg, which might have been a political statement, or maybe she’s just ovoviviparous like that, I don’t know. Anyway, everybody looked very festive, and I’m thinking it might be a hot trend for fall. FREE PUSSY RIOT! (via UBerlin)
FREE PUSSY RIOT! From HuffPo: Petr Pavlensky arrived at St.Petersburg’s Kazan Cathedral with his mouth sewn shut with strands of coarse thread. Many people were impressed, not by this action – he has a history of often much bloodier protest operations involving thread and body parts — but by the poster he held with the message: ‘The performance of Pussy Riot was a replay of Jesus Christ’s famous action (Methodius 21:12-13).’ The passage the poster referred to is a famous scene in which Jesus expels tradesmen and merchants from the church.
“Pavlensky’s protest not only targeted censorship and the unfortunate condition of artists in Russia, but also likened Pussy Riot’s hardships to a Biblical narrative. He stood for an hour and a half at the Kazan cathedral before policemen arrived and circled the artist, who did not respond to their threats. The officers appeared to be afraid to touch him, though he was eventually taken away in an ambulance for psychiatric examination and was determined to be sane. Pavlensky removed the stitches after the action. Meanwhile Pussy Riot’s jail sentence has been extended until January, 2013.” (via Jezebel)
The protest against homophobic chicken sandwiches is underway at the Hollywood Chick-fil-A. As your trusty bloggers chanted and marched for the cause, RDR legend Willam Belli JUST HAPPENED to be driving by. What a weird coincidence, huh? We waved him down, he sang a snippet of his viral video for our cameras, then decided to park and join the protest. NO WAY, CHICK-FIL-A! NO WAY, CHICK-FIL-A!
