The Great Gatsby opens the Cannes Film Festival, causing a bit of a controversy. According to Sky News: “The opening slot is traditionally reserved for a world premiere but the lavish period drama has already been screened across the US. This is seen by some as a increasingly cosy relationship between Hollywood and the festival which was once the home of low-budget films.”. You’d never know it from the crowd reaction though. They went BANANAS when the AAA-list stars appeared at a photocall today. Carey Mulligan looks GORGEOUS in a strapless jumpsuit by Balenciaga – like a big black tongue is licking her torso! Leonardo DiCaprio poses with Baz Luhrman, and at first I was all excited because I thought Baz was wearing a harness. On closer inspection, though, it’s just a cardigan. Juror Nicole Kidman looked flawless (BELL SLEEVES!). Steven Spielberg, who is serving as jury president of this year’s Cannes, wore a ’20s-inspired newsboy cap; Isla Fischer, who plays the doomed Myrtle, was looking STUNNING; and Toby looked like he just escaped from the sanitarium. Chris Pine, Alice Eve, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana pose for photographers at the Star Trek (NO COLON) Into Darkness premiere at the Empire Leicester Square in London; Benedict Cumberbatch is mobbed by fans and paparazzi (I reeeeeally don’t get him); Chris Pine looking impossibly debonaire, with just hint of gray in his beard, making me think that he’s one of those rare actors like George Clooney or John Stamos who just gets more handsome with age; and finally Zoe, wearing a mullet-y dress with streamers on the side. I give up. (Photos: Pacific Coast News)

The Film Society of Lincoln Center presented the 40th Chaplin Award honoring Barbra Streisand last night at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center. The celebration in honor of Babs’ groundbreaking career featured musical performances and film and interview clips, culminating in the presentation of The Chaplin Award by President Bill Clinton. From top left: The lady, the legend, Miss Barbra Streisand, Catherine Deneuve, Amy Irving (would you have recognized her?), and Liza (who looks like she’s sucking on a sour patch kid). Other guests included Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tony Bennett, George Segal, and Kris Kristofferson.

It was a star-studded crowd at amfAR’s Inspiration Gala in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The glamorous event, which raised funds for AIDS Research, honored pop singer Fergie and soccer legend Pele. From top, left: Sharon Stone looking MORE BEAUTIFUL than she’s ever looked before in her vibrant Roberto Cavalli gown and (possibly) BILLION DOLLAR necklace. The bag is slightly wtf, but who cares, she looks STUNNING. Trans supermodel Lea T made the scene, and hopefully some day soon she’ll be famous enough that I won’t have to preface her name with “trans supermodel.” Until then: Omg, yay, it’s trans supermodel Lea T! Kate Moss arrived looking very Kate Moss and Dita arrived looking very Dita, and all was right with the world. (Photos: Pacific Coast News)

Can you imagine? A Game of Thrones post without Kit Harington or Emilia Clarke? Neither actor was on hand for the season 3 premiere in London, which is just as well, I suppose, it gives us a chance to pay attention to some of the other characters. For instance: Who knew Gwendoline Christie looked so lovely out of her warrior drag? Not mannish or terrifying at ALL. And Finn Jones who plays pretty, pretty Ser Loras Tyrell, The Knight of Flowers. I’d forgotten how happy he makes me whenever he has a scene. And is that The Hound? Never noticed what a goofball he is. Love the topknot. And little Isaac Hempstead-Wright. How I’ve worried about Bran Stark over the past year. Seriously. Worried. Stayed up nights thinking about him. How a boy needs his momma and he shouldn’t be on the run. STAY SAFE, BRAN! And look at Tywin Lannister, Charles Dance, bottom row, left. All piss-elegant. Wouldn’t mind him as a daddy. Then there’s Thomas Sangster, whom we haven’t met yet, but you know him as Ferb from Phineus and Ferb, of course. Did you also know that he’s a cousin of Hugh Grant’s? It’s true! And now you know! Firm knot, eh? I got your firm knot RIGHT HERE, Jon Snow. (I don’t know what that means). Anyway, I love that the Harington family has its own motto. Didn’t realize he was a posh boy. Good to know, good to know. (via hedlunds)
