After anchoring New York’s Channel 4 Live at Five news broadcast more than 30 years, Sue Simmons was summarily given the boot, bless her heart. Friday night was her last night, and WNBC paid tribute (or rubbed salt in the wound, whichever way you look at it) with this special broadcast, including comments from fans and well-wishers, clips from her most famous interviews, and a special proclamation from the mayor marking the day as “Sue Simmons Day” in New York. Brian Williams recalled the night she broke in with the news from Ford Theater (oh ha ha ha ha), and Matt Lauer replayed an adorable giggle fit he had with her from his mid-’90s stint. Of course they showed famous “What the FUCK are you doing?” hot mic moment, and all those groundhog faces she was famous for. She will definitely be missed. With her goes a certain part of New York that can never be recaptured. (via Towleroad)

Beloved New York City icon Sue Simmons, who has co-anchored the local news with Chuck Scarborough since 1980, has been let go. LET GO! And with her goes the last reason I would ever move back to New York. Sue Simmons WAS New York. She was brassy, ballsy, nutty, and occasionally loopy – just the sort of dame you want to unwind with after a long day of work. A spokeswoman for WNBC, Dawn Rowan, issued a statement to the New York Times saying: ”We have tremendous respect and admiration for Sue Simmons. For decades, Sue has been a critical part of New York’s longest-tenured anchor team in the city and has more than earned her iconic status.” Entertainment Weekly columnist Mark Harris has taken to twitter denouncing the decision: “Fellow New Yorkers, I hope you all get that this is wrong, stupid and evil.” Cindy Adams wonders, “Why? Nobody’s given us a reason. She looks great. Dresses great. Works great. Her ‘Q’ rating, which assesses popularity, is great. No reason. Sue’s blunder and subsequent apology for saying ‘What the f–k are you doing?’ on air has gotten 2,172,751 YouTube hits. A mistake, sure – but also very New York.”
Watch Sue’s F-bomb at left, as well as her infamous groundhog impersonation. It’s a sad, sad day when a great talent like Sue is let go.
