Alex and Phyllis Madonna opened the Madonna Inn motel in San Luis Obispo, California, in 1958. It had 12 rooms. In 1966 the motel burned down. The Madonnas rebuilt it and it now has 110 rooms, most of them lavishly furnished beyond the imagination of even the most eccentric interior designer or set decorator. Here are some of them, courtesy of BuzzFeed, where you’ll find many more.
“Great Art in Ugly Rooms” re-imagines the enchanting clash that might occur when great works of art land in some of the the most revolting interiors. There are many versions from some of your favorites, no doubt, and they are very cleverly paired by their anonymous creator. The Rothko is making me crazy, in a good way. (Top: Vincent Van Gogh. Middle: Willem de Kooning, Francis Bacon, bottom: Cy Twombly, Mark Rothko)
Opulent, over-the-top rugs, pillows, chairs, candlestick holders, blah, blah, blah…. but it’s the gladiator belts and arm cuffs that are making me sqeal. It helps that they’re being modeled by Elia Cometti, I suppose. They probably wouldn’t look the same on me. I KNOW I could pull off that pink metallic purse in the bottom picture, though. That’s DEFINITELY going on my Christmas wish list. Check out more pics from the Versace home collection (and more pics of Elia) here.
