Ok, call me a grump. But if one more shockingly sweet marriage proposal involving fresh-faced gays, their dancing friends and parents, and flashmobby PDA crops up on YouTube, I’m going to move underground. Or maybe just stop trolling YouTube. But for reals… Finding someone appropriate to date is already a monumental challenge, choreographing a public hoedown of love and hiring a camera crew to document it is more than I can get my grumpy gay-old-maid head around.
So STOP IT GAYS!!!! Stop raising the bar! I’m excited about gay marriage, too but… ONE THING AT A TIME, please.
In other news, Virginia Woolf joins the cast of Downton Abbey? Fun. But I hope O’Brien doesn’t finish her off before she can pen Mrs. Dalloway. I looooooove that book. Which reminds me, I should go buy some lovely flowers for the party to celebrate my own wedding engagement THAT I’LL NEVER HAVE.
Where it’s fun to stay. Meanwhile, back at the ranch. Village People person Randy Jones, he of the cowboy drag and many nephews, is ready to officially settle down for keeps with his pardner. Or, as the couple put it in a press release, ”Disco deity Randy Jones, 60, is rounding up friends and family in Manhattan to legally wed longtime partner Will Grega, a software developer and composer, during three days of festivities.” We’ve known Jones, who happens to be the nicest man, for let’s say a lot of years and he hasn’t aged a minute, bless him. We wish the couple happy trails.
I am so in love with the amazingly talented Cheyenne Jackson, (I know, I am such a Broadway gay) and now is my time to strike, you think I have a chance? But seriously, Cheyenne just split two years after marrying his boyfriend of 13 years, physicist Monte Lapka. The divorce was mutual. Some people are saying it was all Cheyenne, that he’s changing a lot, getting tattoos and just acting differently. Makes me sad when marriages end in divorce, but welcome to the 60%. Look how cute they were together. More importantly, look at my Chey.
As of today Minnesota and Rhode Island have legalized same-sex matrimony. Last night at midnight, folks started tying the knot at Minneapolis city hall. Whooooo!!! For me, Minneapolis = Mary Richards forever (with a purple nod to Prince, of course) and I can imagine right about now an older widowed Mary (see Mary & Rhoda) might be getting busy helping to plan her queer daughter’s big lesbian wedding (poetic license, thank you). Mary as mother of the lesbian bride? What could be sweeter? (Yes, I’m blocking out any Ordinary People Mary-as-evil-mom flashbacks.)
So, let’s rock out to Joan Jett’s happy/grungy cover of the classic Mary Tyler Moore Show theme song, ‘cuz LOVE IS ALL AROUND, Minneapolis!
Well, I read The WOW Report too, you know, so I decided to call in to Martha Stewart‘s radio show. She was broadcasting live from Brent & Josh’s front porch. I stayed on the line for a while, until the very end when I was the last caller Martha took. I was able to congratulate the boys and ask about their guests. They said they were all milling around on the lawn and, in the event of rain, they have a tent set up (the manufacturer actually called in earlier to ask about it and Martha told them she wants them to make her one too. TCB.) Martha asked if they thought she could win The Amazing Race if she went on? Josh and Brent said “Yes!” without hesitation. They also said they recently bought a historic building in Sharon Springs with their Amazing Race winnings, and it is now their new flagship headquarters. Besides their own products, they are working with some two dozen artisans. In fact, their weaver made the tie Brent wore today and the blacksmith made Josh’s ring. (Maybe it was vice versa – hard to tell without a visual.) Anyway, other folks called in to wish them well and it sounds like it was all perfectly lovely. And it’s all being filmed, natch, so you’ll get to see the whole deal in the fall. Ain’t love grand?
