As part of the traveling Alcatraz exhibit that is now on its premises, Alcatraz: The Last Day photo exhibition by Life magazine photographer Leigh Wiener. Here’s is a copy of the weekly Alcatraz prison inmate menu from September 2 to September 8, 1946. It looks pretty good. Breakfast dishes include daily coffee, cereals and/or canned fruits; Thursday was hot griddle cake day. Later in the day, a daily changing soup was available alongside things like roast pork shoulder with sage dressing, chili con carne, corned beef with cabbage, and bacon jambalaya. They even had desserts like apricot pie (!), layer cakes, orange Jello and cupcakes. This is making me kind of hungry but I’m happy that I’m a free man in New York City. (via Inside Scoop SF)

Although this product by designer Chris Godfrey is not yet stocked on the shelves at your local supermarket, it’s really just a matter of time and patent before it is. It may look like a candle, but it’s a tasty compact dinner with all the fixin’s. We’re salivating just looking at the list of contents. Can you name all the layers before reading what they are under the photo?

Long drill bit, (or round skewer if you have things like that)
1. Carefully push drill directly down the center of the hot dog.
2. Keep the knife at the same angle as you slice thru to the drill bit, and roll the hot dog away from you as you continue down the length of the dog. (pics 1 & 2) May or may not take you a couple trys to get method of nice tight coil.
3. Boil the dogs! (pic 3) Microwaving does not produce satisfactory results.
