A schoolteacher from Dallas, Texas, wore the same polyester shirt and vest in his yearbook photo for 40 years. It began as a simple oversight. Dale Irby, a gym teacher who usually wore athletic clothes at school, decided to dress up for his first yearbook photo, in 1973, putting on his best shirt-and-vest ensemble. Which he accidentally repeated the next year. “I was so embarrassed when I got the school pictures back that second year and realized I had worn the very same thing as the first year,” he told the Dallas Morning News. His wife dared him to repeat the outfit for a third year. He took the dare and wore the outfit in five more yearbooks. Then, inevitably, it became a thing.
